The virtues of Ramadan month and the reward of Fasting

Imam Al-Sadiq (pbuh) said: "He who breaks his fast during a day in the Month of Ramadan, the spirit of faith will leave him."[1]

The Messenger of Allah (pbuhp): "He who fasts the Month of Ramadan in attentiveness and silence, and protects his sense of hearing and seeing, his tongue, his genitals and all his limbs from lies, Haram and gossip, seeking closeness, Allah shall make him closer to him, until his knees touch the knees of Ibrahim Al-Khalil (pbuh). "[2]

Amir Al-Mo'mineen (pbuh) said: "Many are the fasters who only get hunger and thirst from their fasting and many are the worshipers who only get exhaustion and staying awake at nights from their prayers!" [3]

Amir Al-Mo'mineen (pbuh) said: "You should repeatedly ask for forgiveness and plead Allah in the Month of Ramadan. As for the pleading, it protects you from ordeals and as for asking for forgiveness, it eradicates your sins." [4]

Imam Sadiq (Pbuh) said: “giving Zakat completes fasting as praying upon the Prophet completes regular prayer.”[5]

The Messenger of Allah (Pbuhp) : "Fast to restore good health[6]

The reward of beaking the fast of your fasting brother: 1)
Al-Sheikh Al-Kulaini states in Al-Kafi Book: Reported from Moussa bin Baker from Imam Abou Al-Hassan Moussa (Pbuh): Breaking the fast of your fasting brother is greater than your fasting." [7]

 2) Al-Sheikh Al-Kulaini states in Al-Kafi Book: Reported from Najem bin Hateem from Imam Abou Jaa'far (Pbuh) that he said: "he who fasts then his brother comes to him and asks him to eat should break his fasting so that he gladdens his brother. Allah then rewards him as if he fasted ten days. It is the saying of Allah {he who does a righteous deed shall be given ten times as much.}"[8]

Manners of Fasting:
The Messenger of Allah (pbuh) heard a woman curse a female servant of hers as she was fasting. So, the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) asked for some food for her and told her:" Eat." So, she said:" I am fasting, O Messenger of Allah (pbuh)." Thus, he said:" How could you be fasting and you had cursed your servant. Fasting isn't to stop eating food and drinks. Allah has made it a veil of prevention from
doing great sins by actions and words. How few are the fasters and how many are the hungry!" [9]

The Holy Prophet (PBUHP) said: "The faster is considered to be in a state of worship, even if he was in bed, unless he Backbite a Muslim."[10]

Abu Basir said: "I heard Abu Abdellah (Al-Sadiq) (pbuh) say: "A lie breaks ablution (Wodou') and breaks the fast of a believer." I said: "Then we are doomed." He said: "It's not what you think. It is lying to Allah Almighty, His Messenger and the Imams (pbut) (or telling lies and referring the lies to them).""[11]

Abu Abdellah (Al-Sadiq) (pbuh) said: "When you fast, your ears and eyes must fast along with you, by abstaining from everything Haram and hideous. Quit hypocrisy and quit harming your servants. The solemnity of fast should appear on you and you shouldn't let your day of fast be as your day without fast."[12]

Imam Al - Baqir (PBUH) said:"verily! the Fridays of the month of Ramadan have a superiority over the Fridays of the other months, just as Ramadan Month has a superiority over other months -( and in another narration- just as the Holy Prophet (PBUH) has a superiority over the other Prophets[13]

Amir Al-Mo'mineen (pbuh) said: "The fasting of the heart is better than the fasting of the tongue and the fasting of the tongue is better than the fasting of the stomach."[14]

The Messenger of Allah (pbuhp) said: "Touba (a tree in Heaven) is for those who suffer thirst and hunger for the sake of Allah; they are the ones who will be satiated on the Day of Resurrection."[15]

Abu Basir said: "I heard Abu Abdellah (Al-Sadiq) (pbuh) say: "Fasting isn't only about food and drinks. Mariam (pbuh) said: {I vowed to fast to the Most Gracious,} (1) which means to be silent. So, hold back your tongues, turn your sights away (from what's Haram), don't envy one another and don't fight with each other. For, envy eats faith as fire eats wood." [16]

Imam Al-Sadiq (pbuh) reported that RasoulAllah (PBUHP) reported that Allah says: "Fasting is for me and I am the One who will reward for it."[17]

  • The Messenger of Allah (Pbuhp) said: “for every matter there is Zakat and the Zakat of the Body is Fasting.”
  • The Messenger of Allah (Pbuhp) said: “Fasting is a shield that protects from Hell.”
  • The Messenger of Allah (Pbuhp) said: “he who prevents himself by fasting from food that he desires will truly earn to be fed by Allah from the food and drinks of Heaven.”
  • Ameer Elmo’mineen (Pbuh) said: “the fast of the Self from the pleasures of Donia is the Best Fast.”
  • Ameer Elmo’mineen (Pbuh) said: “Fasting is avoiding the forbidden like the man preventing himself from eating and drinking.”[18]
The Lady of All Women of the Worlds, Fatima Al-Zahraa (pbuh) said: "What use is a faster's fast if he doesn't have control over his tongue, ears, sight and limbs." [19]

The Messenger of Allah (pbuh), speaking of the virtue of the month of Ramadan said:" He who raises many prayers for me, Allah will make his balance (of good deeds) heavier at the day when all balances are light."[20]

Imam Al-Baqir (pbuh) said: "Neither the fasting of he who disobeys the Imam is acceptable, nor is the fasting of a fugitive slave acceptable until he returns, nor is the fasting of a disobedient wife acceptable until she repents, nor is the fasting of a disloyal son acceptable until he becomes loyal.."[21]

[22]."The Messenger of Allah (PBUHP) said: " verily, there is a door in heaven named Al-Rayan, that no one enter but those who fast.
Reported in Al-Kafi Book from Imam Abou Abdellah (Pbuh): “the months are 12 months in the sight of Allah as mentioned in the book of Allah on the day He created the Skies and Lands. The best of months is Allah’s Month that is Ramadan Month. The heart of Ramadan Month is the Night of Fate. Quran descended on the 1st night of Ramadan Month.[23]

Imam Al-Rida (pbuh) said: "He who recites in Ramadan month, one verse of the book of Allah, will be as if he recites the whole Quran in the other months."[24]

Imam Al-Sadeq (Pbuh) said:" It is Mustahab (preferable) for the fasting to pray before breaking his fast, if he has power to do that."[25]

reported from the Messenger of Allah (Pbuhp): “however breaks the fasting of a believer earns the rewards of freeing a faithful slave and all his sins shall be remitted.” One asked: “O Messenger of Allah, not all of us are capable of inviting believers for Iftar.” He (Pbuhp) said: “Allah is generous and give you these rewards even if you only invited him for a sip of yogurt to break his fasting or a sip of water or a few dates if he weren’t capable of buying more.” [26]
