Sleep

Al-Khisal- Sheikh Al-Sadouq p.89:

Abou Abdellah Al-Sadiq (pbuh) said: "Three matters cause the aversion of Allah Almighty: sleep without out staying awake, laughter without amusement and eating after satiety."

Mostadrak Al-Wasa'el- Al-Mirza Al-Nouri vol.31 p.44:

Ibin Abi Hamza said: "I said to Abou Al-Hassan (pbuh): "Your father has told us who his successor is, so would you tell us who he is?" So he took my hand, shook it and then said: " (Allah would never lead a people astray after He had guided them until He made clear to them what to fear)" I fluttered, so he said: "Silence. Never make your eyes used to too much sleep, for it is the least thankful thing about the body.""

Al-Ikhtisas- Sheikh Al-Mofeed p.218:

The Messenger of Allah (pbuhp) said: "Beware of too much sleep, for too much sleep indeed renders the sleeper poor on the Day of Resurrection."

Al-Amali- Sheikh Al-Sadouq and Ma'ani Al-Akhbar:

Abou Baseer reported reported from Al-Sadiq (pbuh) who reported from his forefather (pbut) that the Messenger of Allah (pbuhp) once said to his companions: "Which of you fasts all eternity?" Salman (mbuh): "I, O Messenger of Allah." He (pbuhp) said: "Which of you stays awake all night in worship?" Salman said: "I, O Messenger of Allah." He (pbuhp) said: "Which of you finishes reciting the Quran every day?" Salman said: "I, O Messenger of Allah." Thus, one of his companions became angry and said: "O Messenger of Allah, Salman, this Persian man, wants to boast himself in front of us, people of Quraish. You said, 'who fasts all eternity?' He said, I. Yet he eats most of his days. You said, 'who stays awake all night in worship?' He said, I. Yet, he sleeps most of the night. You said, 'who finishes reciting the Quran every day?' He said, I. Yet, he is silent most of the day." Therefore, the Prophet (pbuhp) said: "Silence O you! What of Wise Luqman's wisdom do you have! Ask him and he shall tell you." The man said to Salman: "O Abou Abdellah, did you not claim that you fast all eternity?" He said: "Yes." So, he said: "Yet, I see you eat most of the days." Thus, he said: "It is not what you think. I fast the three days of every month and Allah says: {he who does a good deed shall gain ten like it.} I fast as well the last day of Shaaban Month and connect it with the fast of Ramadan Month and that is equal to fasting all of eternity." He said: "Did you not claim that you stay awake all night in worship?" He said: "Yes." He said: "Yet, you sleep most of the night." Thus, he said: "It is not what you think. I heard my beloved, the Messenger of Allah (pbuhp), say: "He who purifies himself before sleep shall be as if he spent the night awake in worship." I purify myself before sleep." He said: "Did you not claim that you finish reciting the Quran every day?" He said: "Yes." He said: "Yet, you are silent most of the days." Thus, he said: "It is not what you think. I heard my beloved, the Messenger of Allah (pbuhp), say to Ali (pbuh): "O Abou Al-Hassan, your position in this nation is like that of the Soura "Say: He is Allah, the One and Only" (Al-Ikhlas Soura). He who reads it once has read one third of the Quran. He who reads it twice has read two thirds of the Quran and he who reads it trice has read all the Quran. So, he who loves you with his tongue has completed one third of faith. He who loves you with his tongue and heart has completed two thirds of faith and he who loves with his tongue and heart, and advocates you with his hand has completed all his faith. I swear to Who send me by the Truth, O Ali, if the people of the earth love you as the people of the sky do, Allah would not torment anyone in Hell." I read "Say: He is Allah, the One and Only" Soura trice every day." Thereafter, the man stood up defeated as if he was fed a stone." (This narration is validated in another chapter.)

Tafseer Al-Mizan- Sayed Al-Tabataba'i vol.71 p.276:

Al-Khisal stated that Ali (pbuh) said in the fortieth Hadith: "A Muslim never sleeps in the state of impurity (due to ejaculation). He never sleeps but in a state of purity. However, if no water was readily available, he should perform Tayammum, using dust, for a believer's soul is raised to Allah, the Most High. Therefore, He accepts and blesses it. If its time of death has come, He shall place it in the treasures of His Mercy and if not, He shall send it with the guardians of His angels to return it to its body."

Al-Kafi- Sheikh Al-Koleini vol.3 p.468:

Abou Abdellah (pbuh) said: "He who cleanses himself and then goes to bed shall be as if sleeping in a state of worship (…)"

Al-Khisal- Sheikh Al-Sadouq p.504:

Saeed Bin Olaqa said: "I heard the Prince of Believers, Ali Bin Abi Talib (pbuh), say: "(…) Sleeping between sunset and dusk begets poverty and sleeping before sunrise begets poverty as well (...)"

Wasa'el Al-Shia- Al-Hor Al-Ameli vol.6 p.503:

Al-Baqir (pbuh) said: "Sleeping at daybreak is foolishness, napping is a blessing, sleeping in the afternoon is stupidity and sleeping between sunset and dusk deprives one of sustenance."

Wasa'el Al-Shia- Al-Hor Al-Ameli vol.6 p.499:

Abi Hamza reported that Ali Bin Al-Hussein (pbuh) said: "Never sleep before sunrise, for I would hate that for you. Allah indeed divides at that time the sustenance of people and dispenses it by our hands."

Ahmad Bin Amer Al-Ta'I said: "Ali Bin Moussa Al-Rida (pbuh) said that his father Moussa Bin Jaafar said that his father Jaafar Bin Mohammad said that his father Mohammad Bin Ali said that his father Ali Bin Al-Hussein said that his father Al-Hussein Bin Ali (pbut) said: "(…) The Prince of Believers (pbuh) said: "There are four types of sleep. Prophets sleep, lying down on their backs with sleepless eyes always alert to receiving their Lord's revelation. A believer sleeps on his right side, facing the Qibla. Kings and their sons sleep on their left sides in order to relish what they eat. Iblees, his brothers, every insane person and impaired one sleep flat on their stomach, (…)"

Ilal Al-Shara'e'- Sheikh Al-Sadouq vol.2 p.366:

Imam Ali (pbuh) said to a man of Banu Saed: "Do you want me to tell you about me and Fatima? He was with me and she was the one he loves the most. She used to fill and carry the canteen until it hurt her chest, grind by the mill until her hand was herniated, she swept the house until her clothes became drenched with dust, and she lit the fire under the pot until her clothes darkened. So she was harmed greatly by this. I said to her: "How about you ask your father to bring you a servant to relieve you from what you are suffering from?" She went to the Prophet (pbuhp) and found that he had guests, so she felt shy and left. The Prophet (pbuhp) found out that she came for a favor, so he came to us while we were under our sheets and said: "Peace be upon you, O people of the sheets." We held our tongues and were shy due to the situation we were in. Thereafter, he said: "Peace be upon you." We kept silent and then he said: "Peace be upon you." We were afraid that he would leave if we did not answer, because he used to do that. He greets thrice and waits to be given permission to enter, and if not given, he leaves. I said: "Peace be upon you too, O Messenger of Allah, enter." He entered, sat at our heads and said: "O Fatima, what was your need yesterday from Mohammad?" I was afraid that if we did not answer, he would leave. Therefore, I raised my head from under the sheets and said: "By Allah, I shall tell you, O Messenger of Allah! She used to fill and carry the canteen until it hurt her chest, grind by the mill until her hand was herniated, she swept the house until her clothes became drenched with dust, and she lit the fire under the pot until her clothes darkened. So I said to her: "How about you ask your father to bring you a servant to relieve you from what you are suffering from?" He (pbuhp) said: "I shall tell you what is better for you than a servant. When you prepare for sleep, praise Allah thirty three times (By Subhannallah), thank Allah thirty three times (Al-Hamdulillah) and say Allah is Greater (Allahu-Akbar) thirty four times." Thereafter, Fatima (pbuh) raised her head from under the sheets and said: "I am pleased by Allah and His Messenger. I am pleased by Allah and His Messenger. I am pleased by Allah and His Messenger."
