General Worship Acts in Rajab

* The Quran and Adhkar

The Messenger of Allah (Pbuhp) said: “Whoever recites 'Say: He is Allah, the One' [Surah Al-Ikhlas] ten thousand times with sincere intention during the month of Rajab will come on the Day of Resurrection cleansed of sins, as on the day his mother bore him. Seventy angels will greet him, giving glad tidings of Paradise.”

Iqbal Al-A’mal Vol.3, p.217

The Messenger of Allah (Pbuhp) said: “Whoever recites 'Say: He is Allah, the One' [Surah Al-Ikhlas] a thousand times will come on the Day of Resurrection with the deeds of a thousand prophets and a thousand angels, and none will be closer to Allah than him except one who has surpassed him in recitation. This reward is multiplied during the month of Rajab.”

Iqbal Al-A’mal Vol.3, p.217

The Messenger of Allah (Pbuhp) said: “Whoever recites 'Say: He is Allah, the One' [Surah Al-Ikhlas] one hundred times, blessings will be bestowed upon him, his children, family, and neighbors. Whoever recites it during the month of Rajab, Allah will build twelve palaces for him in Paradise, adorned with pearls and rubies, and will record for him one million good deeds. Then it will be said: 'Take My servant and show him what I have prepared for him.' Ten thousand stewards will come to him—those appointed over his dwellings in Paradise—and will open for him one million palaces of pearls and one million palaces of red rubies, all adorned with pearls, rubies, jewelry, and garments beyond description, known only to Allah. When he sees them, he will be astonished and will ask: 'For which prophet is this?' It will be said: 'This is for you because of your recitation of 'Say: He is Allah, the One.''“

Iqbal Al-A’mal Vol.3, p.217

The Messenger of Allah (Pbuhp) said: “Whoever recites 'Say: He is Allah, the One' [Surah Al-Ikhlas] one hundred times every Friday in Rajab will have a light on the Day of Resurrection guiding him to Paradise.”

Mustadrak Al-Wasa’el Vol.7, p.535

Imam Ali (peace be upon him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (Pbuh) said: “Whoever recites daily and nightly during the months of Rajab, Sha'ban, and Ramadan: Al-Fatihah (The Opening Chapter), Ayat al-Kursi (The Throne Verse), Surah Al-Kafirun (Say: O disbelievers), Surah Al-Ikhlas (Say: He is Allah, the One), Surah Al-Falaq (Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of daybreak), and Surah An-Nas (Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind), each three times; then says: 'Subhan Allah (Glory be to Allah), Alhamdulillah (Praise be to Allah), La ilaha illa Allah (There is no god but Allah), Allahu Akbar (Allah is the Greatest), La hawla wa la quwwata illa billah al-Ali al-Azim (There is no power nor strength except with Allah, the Most High, the Great)'—each three times; then sends blessings upon the Prophet and his family three times, saying: 'Allahumma salli ala Muhammad wa Aal Muhammad wa ala kulli malakin wa nabiyyin (O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, and upon every angel and prophet)'—each three times; then says: 'Allahumma ighfir lil-mu'minina wal-mu'minat (O Allah, forgive the believing men and believing women)'—three times; and then says: 'Astaghfirullah wa atubu ilayh (I seek forgiveness from Allah and repent to Him)'—four hundred times.”

The Prophet (Pbuhp) continued: “By the One in Whose hand is my soul, whoever recites these chapters and performs these acts throughout the three months and their nights, without omission, even if his sins are as numerous as the raindrops, leaves on trees, and the foam of the sea, Allah will forgive him. On the Day of Eid al-Fitr, a caller will announce: 'O My servant, you are truly My ally; for every letter you recited, you have intercession rights for your brothers and sisters, due to your honor with Me.' The Messenger of Allah (Pbuhp) further said: 'By the One Who sent me with the truth as a prophet, if a person recites these chapters and performs these acts during these three months and their nights, even once in his lifetime, Allah will grant him for every letter seventy thousand good deeds, each heavier before Allah than the mountains of the world. Allah will fulfill for him seven hundred needs at the time of death, seven hundred in the grave, seven hundred upon his resurrection, and similarly during the distribution of records, at the scale, and at the bridge (Sirat). Allah will shade him under the shade of His Throne, grant him an easy reckoning, and seventy thousand angels will escort him to Paradise. Allah will say: 'This is your reward for these months,' and he will be taken to Paradise, where what no eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no human heart has conceived, awaits him.'“

A’lam Al-Dein p.355

The Messenger of Allah (Pbuh) said: “Rajab is the month of forgiveness for my nation; therefore, increase your seeking of forgiveness in it, for He is Forgiving and Merciful.”

Nawader Al-Ash’ari p.17

Imam al-Sadiq (peace be upon him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (Pbuhp) said: “Rajab is the month of seeking forgiveness for my nation; therefore, increase your supplications for forgiveness, for He is Forgiving and Merciful. And Sha'ban is my month. In Rajab, frequently say: 'Astaghfirullah (I seek Allah's forgiveness),' and ask Allah for pardon and repentance for what has passed, and protection for the remainder of your lives. In Sha'ban, increase your prayers upon your Prophet and his household.”
Nawader Al-Ash’ari p.17

The Messenger of Allah (Pbuhp) said: “Whoever says in Rajab: 'I seek forgiveness from Allah, besides whom there is no deity, without partner, and I repent to Him,' one hundred times, and concludes it with charity, Allah seals it for him with mercy and forgiveness. And whoever says it four hundred times, Allah writes for him the reward of one hundred martyrs. When he meets Allah on the Day of Resurrection, it will be said to him: 'You have acknowledged My sovereignty; ask of Me what you wish, and I shall grant it to you, for there is none more capable than I.'“

Iqbal Al-A’mal Vol.2, p.648

The Messenger of Allah (Pbuh) said: “Whoever says 'There is no god but Allah' a thousand times during the month of Rajab, Allah will record for him one hundred thousand good deeds and will build for him one hundred cities in Paradise.”

Al-Iqbal Vol.3, p.216

In “Iqbal al-A'mal,” Sayyid Ibn Tawus narrates: “According to a narration, whoever seeks forgiveness from Allah and asks for repentance seventy times in the morning and seventy times in the evening during the month of Rajab, saying 'Astaghfirullah wa atubu ilayh' (I seek forgiveness from Allah and repent to Him), and upon completing seventy times, raises his hands and says, 'Allahumma ighfir li wa tub 'alayya' (O Allah, forgive me and accept my repentance), if he dies in Rajab, he will die with Allah's satisfaction, and the fire will not touch him due to the blessing of Rajab.”

Al-Iqbal Vol.3, p.217

* Supplications

From Muhammad Al-Sajjad, in a long narration: I said to Abu Abdullah (Pbuh): "May I be your ransom, this is the month of Rajab. Teach me a supplication that Allah may benefit me with." Abu Abdullah (Pbuh) said to me: "Write:'In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful,' and say every morning and evening, and after your prayers during the days and nights of Rajab:

 O He whom I hope for every good, and in whom I am safe from His wrath at every evil! O He who gives much in return for little! O He who gives to one who asks Him! O He who gives to one who does not ask Him and does not know Him, out of His kindness and mercy! Grant me, through my request to You, all the good of this world and all the good of the Hereafter, and turn away from me, through my request to You, all the evil of this world and the evil of the Hereafter. For indeed, what You give is not diminished, and grant me more of Your bounty, O Generous One!'

 Then Abu Abdullah (Pbuh) extended his left hand, held his beard, and recited this supplication while moving his right index finger. Afterward, he said: 'O Possessor of Majesty and Honor! O Possessor of Blessings and Generosity! O Possessor of Kindness and Favor! Protect my gray hair from the fire.'

Iqbal Al-A’mal Vol.3, p.211

Imam Zain Al-Abideen (Pbuh) supplicated:

O You who possesses the needs of those who ask, and knows the innermost thoughts of the silent! For every request from You, there is a present hearing and an immediate answer. O Allah, Your promises are true, Your bounties are abundant, and Your mercy is vast. So I ask You to send blessings upon Muhammad and the progeny of Muhammad, and to fulfill my needs for this world and the Hereafter, for You are capable of all things.

Misbah Al-Mutahajjid p.801

Imam Al-Sadiq (Pbuh) used to recite this supplication every day in Rajab: Disappointed are those who come to anyone other than You, and lost are those who seek from anyone but You, and ruined are those who turn to any but You, and barren are those who seek provisions elsewhere, except for those who seek Your bounty. Your door is open to those who desire, Your goodness is freely given to those who ask, Your bounty is available to those who request, and Your blessings are within reach of those who hope. Your provision extends even to those who disobey You, and Your forbearance encompasses those who oppose You. Your habit is kindness to those who err, and Your way is to pardon those who transgress. O Allah, guide me with the guidance of the rightly guided, grant me the diligence of those who strive earnestly, do not make me among the heedless and distant ones, and forgive me on the Day of Judgment.

Iqbal Al-A’mal Vol.3, p.209

Yunus ibn Zhibyan narrated: "I was with my master, Abu Abdullah (Pbuh), when Mu'alla ibn Khunays entered upon us in the month of Rajab. They began discussing supplication in this blessed month, and Mu'alla said, 'O my master, teach me a supplication that encompasses everything recorded in the books of your Shia.' Abu Abdullah (Pbuh) said to him: 'Say, O Mu'alla:

O Allah, I ask You for the patience of those who are grateful to You, the deeds of those who fear You, and the certainty of those who worship You. O Allah, You are the Most High, the Great, and I am Your lowly, impoverished servant. You are the Rich, the Praiseworthy, and I am the humble, abased servant. O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad and the household of Muhammad, and grant me from Your wealth to cover my poverty, from Your forbearance to overcome my ignorance, and from Your strength to overcome my weakness. O Strong One, O Mighty One! O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad and the household of Muhammad, the approved successors, and suffice me in what concerns me of the matters of this world and the Hereafter, O Most Merciful of the merciful ones.

Then he said: 'O Mu'alla, by Allah, this supplication encompasses all that was given from the time of Ibrahim, the Friend of Allah, until Muhammad (Pbuhp).'"

Al-Iqbal Vol. 3, p.210

The Sheikh narrated that the following supplication was recited from Al-Nahiya Al-Muqaddasa, through Sheikh Abu Al-Qasim (may Allah be pleased with him), during the days of Rajab:

O Allah, I ask You by the two who were born in Rajab: Muhammad ibn Ali, the second, and his son Ali ibn Muhammad, the Elect. I seek closeness to You through them, as the best means of nearness. O You to whom all acts of goodness are sought, and from whom all hopes are desired, I ask You with the request of a sinner who has burdened himself with sins and is ensnared by his faults, whose persistence in wrongdoing has grown lengthy, and whose misfortunes have multiplied from calamities. He asks You for repentance, a sincere return, an abandonment of sin, liberation of his neck from the Fire, and pardon for what burdens his record. You are my Master, the greatest hope and trust I have. O Allah, I ask You by Your noble requests and exalted means to shroud me this month with Your vast mercy, abundant blessings, and contentment of the soul with what You have provided until I reach the final resting place and the abode of the Hereafter to which all are destined.

Misbah Al-Mutahajjid p.804

This noble supplication was issued from the Sacred Presence (Al-Nahiya Al-Muqaddasa) through the revered Sheikh `Uthman ibn Sa'id: Recite this supplication every day during Rajab:

O Allah, I ask You by the meanings of all that Your entrusted guardians, who are faithful to Your secrets, exultant with Your command, and describers of Your power and proclaimers of Your greatness, use to call upon You. I ask You by what has been expressed through them of Your will, as You made them repositories of Your words, pillars of Your oneness, signs of Your existence, and positions of Your divine authority—positions that are never absent in any place and through which those who know You recognize You. There is no distinction between You and them except that they are Your servants and Your creation. Their opening and their closing are in Your hands; their beginning is from You, and their return is to You. They are Your supporters, witnesses, standards, defenders, preservers, and explorers. Through them, You have filled Your heavens and Your earth until it became manifest that there is no god but You. By this, I ask You, and by the sites of honor from Your mercy, and by Your positions and signs, to send blessings upon Muhammad and his progeny and to increase me in faith and steadfastness.

O Hidden in His manifestation and Manifest in His concealment and mystery, O Divider between light and darkness, O He who is described without full comprehension and known without resemblance, The limit of every finite, The witness of every witnessed, The originator of every existent, The enumerator of every numbered, The seeker of every lost, There is no deity worshiped besides You. O Possessor of majesty and generosity, O He who cannot be defined by a "how" Nor confined by a "where," O Concealed from every eye, O Eternal, O Sustainer, O Knower of all that is known! Send blessings upon Muhammad and his progeny, Upon Your chosen servants, Your veiled messengers, Your nearest angels, And those angels who are aligned in rows. Bless us in this honored and revered month of Rajab And in the sacred months that follow. Bestow upon us abundant blessings and ample provisions. Fulfill for us the oaths we have made in Your name. By Your greatest, most majestic, and most noble name, Which You placed upon the day, so it became bright, And upon the night, so it became dark, Forgive us for what You know of us and what we do not know of ourselves. Shield us from sins with the best of protections. Suffice us with the decrees of Your will. Grant us Your benevolent care. Do not entrust us to anyone other than You, And do not withhold Your goodness from us. Bless for us what You have written for us in our lives, Purify the hidden corners of our secrets, Grant us security from You, And employ us in the best of faith. Allow us to reach the month of fasting And the days and years that follow it, O Possessor of Majesty and Honor.

Misbah Al-Mutahajjid Vol.2, p.803

* Prayers

Salman narrated that the Messenger of Allah (Pbuhp) said: “Whoever prays ten units (rak'ahs) on any night of Rajab, reciting in each unit the Opening of the Book (Al-Fatihah) once, 'Say: O disbelievers' (Al-Kafirun) once, and 'Say: He is Allah, the One' (Al-Ikhlas) three times, Allah, the Blessed and Exalted, will forgive all the sins he has committed. For each unit, Allah will record for him the worship of sixty years, grant him a palace of pearl in Paradise for each surah recited, and bestow upon him the reward of one who has fasted, prayed, performed Hajj and Umrah, and strived in that year. Allah will also write for him, until the following year, the reward of a daily Hajj and Umrah. He will not finish his prayer until Allah has forgiven him. When he completes his prayer, an angel beneath the Throne will call out: 'Resume your deeds, O friend of Allah, for Allah has freed you from the Fire.' Allah will record him among the worshippers for the entire year. If he dies during that period, he will die as a martyr. Allah will answer his supplications, fulfill his needs, give him his book in his right hand, brighten his face, and place between him and the Fire seven trenches.”

Al-Iqbal Vol.3, p.179

The Messenger of Allah (Pbuhp) said: “Whoever recites 'Say: He is Allah, the One' (Surah Al-Ikhlas) one hundred times in two units of prayer on any night of Rajab, it is as if he has fasted for one hundred years in the cause of Allah. Allah will grant him one hundred palaces in Paradise, each palace neighboring a prophet.”

Al-Iqbal Vol.3, p.180

The Messenger of Allah (Pbuhp) said: “Whoever fasts a day in Rajab and performs four units of prayer, reciting Ayat al-Kursi one hundred times in the first unit and 'Say: He is Allah, the One' (Surah Al-Ikhlas) two hundred times in the second unit, will not die until he sees his place in Paradise or it is shown to him.”

Al-Iqbal Vol.3, p.199

Abdullah ibn Abbas reported that the Messenger of Allah (Pbuhp) said: “Whoever prays four units between Zuhr and Asr on a Friday in Rajab, reciting Al-Fatiha once, Ayat al-Kursi seven times, and 'Say: He is Allah, the One' five times in each unit, then says ten times, 'I seek forgiveness from Allah, there is no god but He, and I ask Him for repentance,' Allah will record for him from that day until his death a thousand good deeds daily. Allah will grant him a city of red ruby in Paradise for each verse recited, a palace of white pearl for each letter, marry him to the maidens of Paradise, be pleased with him without anger thereafter, count him among the devout worshippers, seal his life with happiness and forgiveness, record fifty thousand prayers for each unit, crown him with a thousand crowns, place him among the truthful in Paradise, and he will not depart this world until he sees his place in Paradise.”

Iqbal Al-A’mal Vol.3, p.200

Thawban reported: “We were with the Prophet (Pbuhp) in a cemetery. He stopped, then moved on, then stopped again, and moved on. I asked, 'May my father and mother be sacrificed for you, O Messenger of Allah, why do you pause between these graves?' The Messenger of Allah (Pbuhp) wept intensely, and we wept with him. When he finished, he said, 'O Thawban, these people are being punished in their graves. I heard their groaning, felt compassion for them, and prayed to Allah to lighten their punishment, and He did. Had they fasted during the days of Rajab and stood in prayer during its nights, they would not have been punished in their graves.'“ I asked, “O Messenger of Allah, does fasting and praying during Rajab protect one from the punishment of the grave?”

The Prophet (Pbuhp) replied: “Yes, O Thawban. By the One who sent me with the truth as a prophet, any Muslim man or woman who fasts a day in Rajab and stands in prayer during its night, seeking thereby the countenance of Allah the Exalted, Allah will record for them the worship of a thousand years—the fasting of its days and the standing in prayer of its nights. It will be as if they have performed a thousand pilgrimages and a thousand lesser pilgrimages with lawful wealth, fought a thousand battles, freed a thousand slaves from the descendants of Ishmael, given a thousand dinars in charity, and as if they have purchased and freed captives from my nation for the sake of Allah. It will be as if they have fed a thousand hungry people. Allah will grant them safety from the punishment of the grave and the terror of Munkar and Nakir.” It was asked, “O Messenger of Allah, is all this reward for one who fasts a single day or stands in prayer a single night in Rajab?” The Prophet (Pbuhp) replied: “This is for one who does not deny the power of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic.” Then it was asked, “O Messenger of Allah, is the reward of Rajab greater or that of the month of Ramadan?” The Prophet (Pbuhp) said: “There is no comparison to the reward of Ramadan Month, but Rajab is a great month.” It was further asked, “What if one is unable to stand in prayer?” The Prophet (Pbuhp) said: “Whoever prays the late evening prayer and then performs two units before the witr, reciting in them what Allah has taught him from the Quran, I hope that this reward will not be withheld from him.” Thawban said: “Since I heard that, I have rarely neglected it.”

* Ziyara and Umrah

Muhammad ibn Sulayman said: I asked Abu Ja'far (al-Jawad, Pbuh) about a man who performed the obligatory Hajj, entering into it with the intention of 'Umrah followed by Hajj. Allah assisted him in completing his 'Umrah and Hajj. Then he went to Medina and greeted the Prophet (Pbuh). After that, he came to you, recognizing your right, knowing that you are Allah's proof over His creation and His gate through which He is approached, and greeted you. Then he went to Abu 'Abdullah al-Husayn (Pbuh) and greeted him. Then he went to Baghdad and greeted Abu al-Hasan Musa (Pbuh). After that, he returned to his homeland. When the time for Hajj came again, Allah granted him the means to perform Hajj. Which is better: for this man, who has already performed the obligatory Hajj, to go again for Hajj, or to go to Khurasan to your father, 'Ali ibn Musa (Pbuh), and greet him? He (Pbuh) replied: No, it is better for him to go to Khurasan and greet Abu al-Hasan (Pbuh), and let that be in the month of Rajab.

Al-Kafi Vol.4, p.584

From Khayr ibn Abdullah, who narrated from our master—referring to Abu al-Qasim al-Husayn ibn Ruh (may Allah be pleased with him): He said: "When you visit any of the sacred shrines during the month of Rajab, say:

Praise be to Allah, who allowed us to visit His saints in Rajab and obligated upon us the recognition of their rights as He has ordained. May Allah send blessings upon Muhammad, the chosen one, and upon his successors, the veils of divine light. O Allah, just as You have allowed us to witness their visitation, fulfill for us their promise and grant us entry to their place of gathering, without withholding from us the refreshment of a drink in the abode of permanence and eternity. Peace be upon you. I have come to you and relied upon you with my request and need, which is the liberation of my neck from the Fire, and companionship with you in the abode of permanence alongside your righteous Shia. Peace be upon you for the patience you endured, and excellent indeed is the ultimate abode. I am your supplicant and reliant upon you, in matters entrusted to you and recompensed through you. Through you, the broken is mended, the ill is healed, the wombs increase, and their decreases are decreed. I am a believer in your secrets, submissive to your words, and I call upon Allah through you, for the fulfillment, execution, and success of my needs, and for the resolution and betterment of my affairs through your intercession. Peace be upon you—a peace of one who bids farewell, entrusting his needs to you. I ask Allah for the chance to return to you and that my efforts toward you remain unceasing. I ask Him to bring me back from your presence with the best return, to a life abundant in blessings, a state of comfort and ease until the appointed time, and the best of destinies and stations in eternal bliss, in a life of promise and lasting delight, with eternal sustenance, the drink of the pure nectar and flowing streams, in an abundance that neither diminishes nor tires. May Allah’s mercy, blessings, and greetings be upon you until I return to your presence, attain success at your return, and be gathered in the Hereafter among your group. May Allah’s mercy, blessings, salutations, and greetings be upon you. Indeed, He is sufficient for us, and He is the best disposer of affairs.”

Mosbah Al-Motahajid P.821

The Messenger of Allah (Pbuhp) said: “The best 'Umrah is the 'Umrah performed in Rajab.”

Al-Faqeeh Vol.2, p.220

Mu'awiyah ibn Ammar narrated from Imam Abu Abdullah (Pbuh), who said: “The one performing 'Umrah may do so in any month of the year that they wish, but the best 'Umrah is the 'Umrah in Rajab.”

Al-Kafi Vol.4, p.536

Mu'awiyah ibn Ammar narrated from Imam Abu Abdullah (Pbuh), who was asked: “Which 'Umrah is better, the 'Umrah in Rajab or the 'Umrah in Ramadan Month?” He replied: “No, the 'Umrah in Rajab is better.”

Al-Faqeeh Vol.2, p.453

Zurara narrated from Imam Abu Ja'far (Pbuh), who said to him: “What is the best pilgrimage performed by people?” He replied: “'Umrah in Rajab and an isolated Hajj ('Hajj Mufrad') in the same year.”
